Garmin Teases In-Dash Infotainment System with Multi-Sensor Knob

Garmin Teases In-Dash Infotainment System with Multi-Sensor Knob

Garmin is slowly branching out its GPS business to the in-car infotainment niche, deciding to set its focus towards permanent in-dash installations instead of dedicated compact devices.

Its latest development emphasizes on improving control systems, wherein Garmin may be ditching touchscreen control slightly in favor of a console-mounted controller so drivers can adjust settings and navigate minimizing distractions. The system uses a proximity-sensing rotary knob that automatically displays the appropriate interface as the driver’s hand approaches, as well as a touchpad and various HVAC controls, car monitoring, and smartphone app integration.

This console rotary knob control system, which remains to be named by Garmin, remains in concept phase. Judging by the looks of it, this system is a practical solution for future vehicle interfaces.
